What is a Dental Filling?
A dental filling is a material your dentist may use to repair a cavity or any tooth damage, like a crack or fracture. By closing off spaces where bacteria can enter, a filling also helps prevent further decay.
Repair Tooth Decay Or Damage
Only your dentist can detect whether you have a cavity that needs to be filled. During a checkup, your dentist will examine the surfaces of each tooth. Anything that looks abnormal will then be closely checked with special instruments. Your dentist may also take digital x-rays.
The type of treatment your dentist chooses will depend on the extent of damage caused by decay.

If the best option is a dental filling, your dentist will first remove the decay from the tooth, clean the affected area, and then fill it with a filling material.
- Inlays & Onlays
Inlays and onlays are single, solid-piece dental restorations that are made outside of the mouth and then placed inside the mouth to fill the damaged area.
They are often used in cases where a tooth is too damaged to support a standard dental filling, but not damaged enough to warrant a dental crown.
Inlays are used to repair decay between the cusps of a tooth while onlays are used to cover the cusps as well.
